Download speed

Hi,

I've just switched to TalkTall and getting slightly lower speeds than my previous ADSL provider !

Talk Talk exchange checker says I should be able to get 11.4 Mb/s download, but currently only getting 5.5 Mb/s.

Can my IP profile be changed so that I can get closer to exchange checker value ?

Thanks

Re: Download speed

Hi danny0367 and welcome to the forums. :smileyhappy:
You will almost certainly be on the TalkTalk default line profile with a target SNR margin of 12dB, so there are faster settings available. The support staff on here will be able to do that for you - if the automated Dynamic Line Management doesn't beat them to it - please leave your router connected 24/7 if you don't already, so that they can check the logs and ensure that all is OK after any reset.
Bear in mind that it is not real time support on here, so it may be Monday or later before they get around to you.
Finally, you will be better putting this topic in The Broadband Speed & Web Browsing section, you can do this using the blue Topic Tools button near the top of the page.
Regards,
Chiz

Re: Download speed

Thanks very much Chiz.

Moved to other topic as suggested.

Router is on 24/7, so I'll check periodically.

Thanks for the great quick response. A nice refreshing change !

Can TalkTalk confirm when my profile will be adjusted ?

10Mb/s download would be great !
Thanks a lot !

Re: Download speed

Hi danny0367,

I have amended the profile to 6db which is the fastest profile we have. Let us know how the connection compares :smileyhappy:

Re: Download speed

Hi Michelle,

Seems to be ok on the new setting.

I regularly doing speed tests, and although it varies, seems to be acceptable.

I'll keep monitoring in the meantime.

Thanks for the fast service.:smileyvery-happy:

Re: Download speed

Hi Michelle,

Quick update for you.

TT speed tester regularly shows download speed ~ 8.5 Mbs and upload ~ 0.8 Mbs

Stats from DSL-2780 show:

ADSL Mode ADSL2+

Interleaving On

DSL Line Speed up 1012 kbps down 10075 kbps

Line Attenuation up 11.7 down 30.0

SN Margin up 9.6 down 8.7

Total Errors Seconds 5

Just a few questions.
Why does the router show DSL line speed down as 10Mbs but TT speed checker shows only 8.5 Mbs for download speed ?
Why is there a difference between up and down attenuation ? Is that normal ?

Thanks

Re: Download speed

Q1: The router sync speeds are the rate at which the router and the server "agree" to exchange data. The actual throughput - as indicated by speedtesters - excludes any overheads bundled in with the data you actually receive and is typically around 80-85% of sync speed, so your numbers look fine.

Q2: That is a normal feature of ADSL broadband, remember the "A" stands for "Asymmetric."

Re: Download speed

Cheers redchiz
Exchange checker shows that I should expect download 11.43 Mbs
DSL-2780 shows DSL line speed down as 10.1 Mbs
TT speedchecker shows download 8.5 Mbs
Its all bit confusing to me :smileymad:

I wasnt referring to speed, but attenuation. Surley my attenuation should measure the same for both up and down as this is the line resistance back to the telephone exchange ?

Re: Download speed

Hi danny0367,
The exchange checker just gives an estimate of your speed
DSL-2780 shows DSL line speed down as 10.1 Mbs

This the speed at which the router syncs with the exchange
TT speedchecker shows download 8.5 Mbs

This is the actual throughput figure and is always lower than sync speed (as Chiz says, usually around 80% to 85% of sync speed)

I can see where you are coming from but in reality upstream attenuation is nearly always around 50% of downstream attenuation (or there abouts)
I have reset your connection because the errored seconds count has been high and snr has been below target

Oh ok, that would be why my phone call over the internet suddenly disconnected this morning :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Download speed

Hi danny0367,

DLM has changed the profile to 15db due to an increase in the number of errored seconds which can affect the broadband speed. Could you complete the below broadband sticky questions as this will help us to investigate further,

1. What exchange are you connected to?
2. How many telephone extension sockets do you have?
3a. Do you have an NTE5 master socket?
3b. If yes to question 3a, have you tried the test socket?
3c. If yes to question 3b, how long for and did you notice an improvement in your connection?
3d. Do you have an iPlate or ADSL faceplate?
4. Is your modem/router connected to your Master Socket?
5. Are you experiencing any problems with your phone service?
6. What modem are you using? (Make & Model)?
7. Have you tested with an alternative modem? (Make & Model)
8. Have you tested with a different microfilter?
9. Are you using a telephone extension lead?
10. What is your modem SNR Margin down and up?
11. What is your bandwidth (Connection or sync speed) down and up?
12. What is your attenuation down and up?
13. Are you experiencing the disconnections at any specific time?
14. Are you currently using Wireless?
15. Do you have an Alarms and/or Sky boxes connected to the telephone line?

Re: Download speed

Hi danny0367,

If possible can you connect the modem directly to the test socket. We can then try faster profiles to see how the connection stats compare.
